ZFS over iSCSI over ZFS

Some stuff I was hacking away on at work today; this is mostly a note to self:

The tl;dr version:

  1. double-check commands you type when playing with disks

  2. triple-check commands you type when playing with disks

  3. see #1 and #2

  4. the way to "refresh" the list of iscsi targets on the initiator is `iscsiadm modify discovery -t enable` (yes, I already had it enabled; it works anyway)

  5. it's `zpool iostat [pool] [interval]`, not `zpool iostat [interval] [pool]`

Sleep is for the weak

Alright, so I've been doing a polyphasic sleep schedule for the last couple of days and I'm surprising not very tired. The yawning is starting to get irritating, though.

And then I found the schedule I should have been trying all along: the Batman Schedule!!!

Man...I'm gonna have to start all over again, just so I can get superpowers.

So, we're doing a poetry party in Japanese on Thursday, and of course the homework is to write たんか. They don't have to be in Japanese...except for the students that the prof knows are in 4th year or beyond (ie, me).

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

Now, why couldn't they have changed Setsuna's character model so I know whether it's a flashback or it's real?

And why won't people just stay dead! Damn you, Bandai, for playing with my emotions like that!

Writer's Block: Sharing Haikus

The Japanese haiku poet Basho once wrote, "Old pond / a frog jumps / the sound of water." Try writing some of your own haikus about the little things in your life. A haiku generally consists of a five-syllable line, a seven-syllable line and a second five-syllable line. You can also use any combination of ten-to-fourteen syllables.

OMG! It's so wrong!

水の音

also, apparently google chrome in wine fails at Japanese - I just get squarenese instead :( nm; got it fixed

also: "you can use any combination of ten-to-fourteen syllables" ? wth? of course you can use as many or as few as you want; it's a poetry style for a completely different language with a completely different way of counting "sounds"

So, I've been rolling into work on my bike for 2.5 weeks now and actually tracking me speed online. I just realized tonight when I went to add the latest adventure that I could figure out how many miles I've travelled total.
It's usually 5.32mi to work and back, but I took the long way in today to get around the bridge (7.33mi). All total I've biked in 9 times out of 10, so ....

17 trips @ 5.32mi + 1 trip @ 7.33mi = 97.77mi

I'm gonna hit 100mi sometime tomorrow on the way in! If I keep up the way I'm going, I could actually hit somewhere around 1000mi on my bike this year. That's a lot of pedalling. At the speed I go, that's also about a FF game worth of biking. Oh well, I guess going to work is better than sitting around for 70hrs playing FF. I think...

so...I started riding my bike to work when my bus pass ran out at the end of June. And then 2 weekends ago, I wrote a little web app thingy to track how long it takes me to get there and back (and other places, if I go there...which I really don't).

When I first rode in a couple times this spring, it took me about 40min to get in and out each day. It's definitely easier coming home (especially with the tailwind), so I've noticed that that's usually faster.

And then today, I managed to make it home in 21:16. This might not seem like a big milestone, since it's just a random time (20:00 would have been nice, and I probably could have done it if I'd timed the lights better downtown), but you see, it's 5.32 miles to work (and back).

5.32 miles / 0.3544 hours = 15.01 mph

Yay! I can average 15mph on the way home ^_^
Now, the real trick will be doing it again later this week.

Time for me to catch up on all those things I've been putting off for school...like video games, and...okay, that's about it

逃ゲロゲロ makes me laugh...man, how did I ever play Chrono Trigger without all the silly Japanese puns?
although...the rats saying でチュー all the time are getting annoying.

I'm already up to 時の最期, and I've only been playing for like 8hrs! of course...in English that'd be like 2hrs worth ^^;;

International Postage

hmm...apparently you can't make an empty post; but that's neither here nor there.

So, I finally got that letter to my host family written. It's all done, the envelope is ready to be addressed...

crap - I completely blanked on how to address an envelope in Japanese (well, except the numbers in the nice red boxes; that part's easy). Apparently, searching on the internets is the wrong way to combat this problem and I had to go look it up in my Japanese book :/

So...after correctly selecting Japan (I don't want my letter going to Jordan, tyvm), I go find the international addressing section of the USPS site. You'd think they would have a link from the international postage to there, but apparently you're supposed to address the letter first and then find out how much it costs to send it. The instructions say that Uncle Sam only speaks English and foreign languages are allowed only if you also write the address in English.
So, we have my address in English, my host family's address in Japanese, written sideways along the long edge (actually, it's written top-bottom like it should be, but there's apparently a surcharge if I say it that way), and then my host family's address in English, because the post office is too stupid to see "To Japan" and then let them deal with these funny looking pictures I drew all over the envelope.
Also, my ふりがな is upside-down since that's the way that will make sense to the person putting it on the plane with the rest of the "envelopes with funny-looking pictures drawn all over them."
